How To Create a Joyful Practice Through Rituals

One of the most important things you can do when you create artwork or designs is to have a consistent ritual to support your practice. Why is this important? Because as artists, we tend to get in our head about our decisions especially when we look at other artists. We can second guess ourselves, get distracted with social media and emails, forget to focus on our creative expression, and wonder “why am I even creating art?” Here are some tips for establishing rituals around your practice:

  • Clean your workspace once a week. Working in a clean space creates room for new work.

  • Include in your ritual something relaxing like listening to music or lighting a candle (if it is safe).

  • Put creative work time on your calendar even if it is 30 minutes a day. Make that time for yourself.

  • Never leave your studio or workspace without having something started to come back to (it is harder to start your day with a blank page, canvas or screen).

  • Participate in a challenge or start a 100-day project to create small pieces that you can look forward to.

  • Start your day with art to get in the habit of creating even on the days you are taking care of business or a busy personal life.
